ARCHITECTURE & INTERIORS: Residential Interiors
Wayne’s philosophy of interior photography is often about communicating the flow and connection between the interior accommodation and the exterior setting. Whether it’s a large living room leading out to terraces and a sea view, or a penthouse with views to the NY skyline, he’s all about enhancing this symbiosis.
Balancing the darker interior spaces with the brighter exterior views is one of the most challenging technical aspects of architectural photography. Wayne’s decades of experience endow him with mastery of a wide variety of options to best capture this balance in the most appropriate and efficient way for each case.
Wayne loves to chase and “dance with the light”; he will often first look to portray the beauty of a space by respecting and enhancing the existing natural and artificial light. For him it’s a joyous experience to produce a stunning image by squeezing the maximum advantage out of the most propitious time of day for the scene. He revels in the twilight hour, that brief but magical time of day when the interior and exterior lighting balances naturally- ideal for glamorous images in that evening ambience.
To create the final effect and impact he is looking for, he may choose to enhance it by adding supplemental lighting on-site and/or post-production processing improvements. Alternatively, a scene may be entirely lit from scratch in order to create a specific look... or whenever the real-life lighting and weather are not providing the requisite conditions!
As with exteriors, the type of client and the purpose of the imagery are of upmost importance when planning and preparing an assignment. One type of client may prefer the property be photographed in the purest form, exactly as it is with just a minimal of furniture moving to accommodate the camera angles. A different client may require that we supply our optional styling team to make the house come alive with flowers, food and accessories in order to create a lifestyle sensation; to invite the viewer into the scene, as if the breakfast tray on the bed was meant for them.
It is this across the board ability with the various techniques that allows Wayne to blend these different options while still keeping a fluid and constant style throughout the entire production. His ability to create imagery in a wide variety of ways allows him to opt between more or less intensive on-site productions, to best suit each project’s needs.
It is particularly important that no matter how his images were created, they do not look overly manipulated on the computer or artificially lit. Regardless of the circumstances, clients are assured beautiful imagery with a strong aesthetic and commercial impact.
